O/L to Degree – A New Higher Education Path for Students to Consider

Two decades ago, the idea of entering a degree program straight from G.C.E. O/L (Ordinary Level) was nothing more than a dream. However, times have changed, and today’s education landscape in Sri Lanka offers new and exciting opportunities for students who wish to fast-track their academic journeys, creating young professionals across many fields. This article is an exploration of this new trend in the higher education landscape in Sri Lanka.

The Changing Higher Education Landscape

Back then, the traditional education path in Sri Lanka was set in stone—O/Ls, A/Ls, and then, if you were lucky enough to get a good Z-score you’d make it to a prestigious government university.

But today, the higher education scene is completely transformed with the rise of the private higher education sector in the country. With this, alternative academic paths have emerged that allow students to bypass traditional government secondary education requirements. This has provided many more students who want to start their careers as soon as possible rather than spending years on A/Ls. In the private sector job market, professional skills and training take priority over O/L or A/L qualifications. This shift makes sense, considering the primary purpose of the G.C.E. A/L exam, which is to

Providing Essential Knowledge – For disciplines like engineering and medicine, G.C.E.A/L subjects such as combined mathematics and chemistry provide fundamental knowledge required for undergraduate study. Without this foundation, students may struggle with the complexity of university coursework.

University Selection Process – A/Ls acts as a competitive filtering mechanism, allowing only the most qualified students to enter government universities. The rigorous nature of the A/L examination prepares students for the academic challenges of university life. Many graduates even consider A/Ls to be the hardest exam they have ever faced.

Why Some Students Are Pursuing Degrees Without A/Ls?

While G.C.E. A/Ls remain, an increasing number of students are choosing to bypass it in favor of direct entry into degree programs. This trend is particularly noticeable in fields like IT, business, tourism, etc., where traditional academic qualifications are not always necessary. Here, the gap is filled by foundation-level programs offered by these private universities, which provide a clear path to a degree with diplomas or higher diplomas as stepping stones.

More and more students now take interest in this path as those who qualify early get the chance to enter the workforce sooner, which is a major advantage when building a career. On the other hand, employers also appreciate young employees as they are more adaptable, eager to learn, and have fewer personal commitments compared to older job seekers.

So, more people now seek faster and more flexible routes to employment—they want to gain skills, get trained, and start earning.

Now, it’s very common to find local universities offering internationally accredited degree programs, which, once you complete, are well accepted for post-graduate programs even in the most prestigious government universities of Sri Lanka.

Choosing the Right Path

While the direct G.C.E. O/L-to-degree path is an excellent option for some, it is not suitable for everyone. Factors such as a student’s maturity, career aspirations, and preferred industry should be carefully considered. Certain professions, especially roles in medical sciences, engineering and government sector, still require both G.C.E. A/Ls and a degree for qualification. On the other hand, school life—especially after O/Ls—is about more than just academics. It’s a time when students can build essential life skills, explore their interests, and grow in confidence through extracurricular activities and personal development. Skipping this phase may mean missing out on experiences that shape character, creativity, and soft skills that are just as important as academic success

However, for students aiming for high-demand industries such as IT, and business and open to working in the private sector, multinational companies or foreign markets, skipping A/L saves time, money, resources and unnecessary stress.
